It is a requirement of the IB Diploma Programme that students study at least one subject from group 2: Language acquisition.
The Spanish ab initio course is designed for students with little or no prior knowledge of the Spanish language. It provides learners with the linguistic skills and intercultural understanding needed to communicate effectively in everyday situations. Learning a language on the IBDP is a fundamental component of developing international-mindedness and culturally sensitive communication, which are central to the programme. Through the study of a wide range of written, audio, visual and audio-visual texts, students gradually build confidence in using Spanish in practical and meaningful contexts.
The study of Spanish ab initio encourages students to develop an awareness and appreciation of perspectives from Spanish-speaking cultures. The course supports learners in building essential vocabulary and grammatical structures that enable them to understand and communicate ideas related to personal identity, experiences, daily life and the wider world. Students develop receptive, productive and interactive skills through engaging tasks that promote communication in familiar contexts.
In essence, the course fosters curiosity about other cultures and promotes enjoyment in learning a new language – a skill for life. Spanish ab initio is specifically aimed at students who are beginning their language-learning journey or who have very limited prior exposure to Spanish. Over the course of the programme, students progressively develop the ability to communicate with increasing accuracy and confidence, providing a solid foundation for further study, travel, work and intercultural engagement.
