Yes, you can. Most online A Levels follow a specification set by an exam board, such as AQA, Edexcel or Pearson. This means pupils who study A Levels online will achieve the same qualifications as pupils who study at school or college. Your qualifications will have the same value and will be accepted by universities.

Studying A Levels online from home provides school leavers with great flexibility. You can schedule your learning around other non-educational commitments, such as sports or the arts. Or you may prefer to study this way if you experience stress or anxiety when learning in a physical environment.

Online A Levels typically take two years to complete, with course materials and tutor support available. This covers both the AS and A Level parts of the qualification, as well as sitting exams at registered exam centres.

At King’s InterHigh, teaching hours reach up to five hours per week, divided between seven 40-minute classes. We recommend you study each of your subjects for up to three hours per week. This includes:

• Private reading
• Home learning
• Revision

During exam periods, we suggest you study a little more than this. However, how much you study overall depends on your individual ability and comfort zone. What works for you may not work for other learners, and vice versa.

You can study the same A Level subjects online as you can in a traditional Sixth Form or College.

There is no difference in the eyes of a university between the qualification you get from a physical Sixth Form or College and the ones you receive from studying your A Levels online. You may wish to take one isolated subject online, if your Sixth Form or College doesn’t offer it, or you can enjoy the benefits of online learning full-time.

For the academic year of 2024-25, UCAS has confirmed that there is a maximum of 56 points and a minimum of 16 points for A Levels from Grade A*-E. The number of UCAS points you get from an A Level depends on the grade you receive; the higher your grade, the more points you earn.

UCAS points are used by universities to evaluate and compare all post-16 qualifications in the UK. This means that students applying to universities can be compared, no matter whether they studied A Levels, BTECs or any other qualifications. Universities set a recommended number of UCAS points to ensure that students who are accepted onto each course have the academic ability and study skills to be able to excel in their degree. Most degree courses will have the number of UCAS points they require on their websites, so be sure to check both the number of UCAS points and the subjects they require for that course, when choosing your A Level subjects. This will put you in the best position possible when it is time to start your university application.

Our International A Level language courses in French, German and Spanish are not designed for beginners to a language. These courses require a certain level of proficiency in order to access the content and indeed a good proportion of the language teaching will be carried out in the target language. If a student does not understand a language at an intermediate level, has not studied it before, or perhaps speaks the language at home, it will be hard to access the lessons.

For Year 12 International A Level courses, we would expect one of the following to ensure the student can be successful on the course:

• That they have passed a GCSE or iGCSE qualification to a good standard.
• That they have a CEFR Level of A2/B1 or above. Consideration must be given here as to how the assessment has been made – does it involve all four skills of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking? You can see the framework here: Common European Framework Reference table
• That they have lived for a significant time in a country where the language is spoken, attending school in that language and being able to converse in the language.
• That they have a parent or close family members with whom they communicate in the target language – consideration must be given in this case to the level of written language.

Once joining the course, the class teacher will be able to determine whether this is the right course for the student, and if not then they will communicate with the student and parents or carers in order to guide them towards a more suitable course. This is all about ensuring students can be successful and enjoy their studies. In some cases, students may wish to discuss their individual circumstances with the school.

Studying languages is a wonderful way to broaden your understanding of other cultures and communicate in a globalised world. The skills picked up in languages also complement other studies. All our Language A levels are international courses, meaning students can take exams at the end of the first and second A level years.

Both British A Levels and the IB Diploma Programme are two year programmes. They are designed by the awarding bodies to be studied over two school years so that students complete the whole course of study, embed their knowledge and hone the skills associated with their subjects ready for future study. It is also important to study over the intended duration so that students can prepare effectively for exams. Additionally, each course carries with it a set of guided learning hours that would be challenging to meet in a single year.

It is not impossible to study an A level in a single year but this should be discussed with the Head of Sixth Form and the following should be kept in mind:

• If you have not studied a subject at A Level or Diploma Programme level before you should be joining for year 1 of each subject programme and expect to study it for two years. Please note with the Diploma Programme we are not able to enrol students into the second year at all in 24-25. In short, if this is new study of a course you should start in year 1 of 2.
• If you have studied a year of an A level subject elsewhere, it is certainly possible to pick up the second year of A level study with King’s InterHigh. Please check your exam board matches ours on the A Level subject pages (here).
  • If you have studied the same exam board that is a good sign, simply email your teacher when you start to let them know and ask for the content covered in the first year so you can check if you have any gaps you need to revise.
  • If you have studied a separate board you should request the subject specification from your current school you are leaving and compare it to the specification listed on the subject page of our website (here) to see the extent of any overlap. We can assist and provide the topics studied on both years of our courses to help you to make a decision – simply email the subject teacher or contact@kingsinterhigh.co.uk
• If a student is enrolled in only a single year group of a programme, we are unable to teach them the content of the other year at the same time or provide additional sessions to students seeking to do A level in a year.
• However if a student without prior study decides to go ahead with doing an A level in a year, they can enrol on both year 1 and 2 of the A level at the same time for access to live lessons in both years. It should be noted that this would mean paying for two subjects as each year carries a full complement of lessons. In doing this we will do our best to avoid lesson clashes, although there may be some due to cross year study. It is worth remembering the final exams at the end of year 2 would take place before the end of year 1 lessons making this route one to consider very carefully. This is not generally an advisable option and should only be considered in very specific circumstances (e.g. the course has been studied before) and having spoken to the Head of Sixth Form.
• Students can have access to the previous year’s resources (not lesson recordings) to help them if they choose this route. They can also take the previous year’s mock exams and have feedback on these and they have access to their teacher as A level students to ask questions. For some students this is suitable. The decision to take an A level in a year however is largely one that means the student is self-teaching one year’s worth of content – it is possible but challenging. Please consider it carefully and arrange to speak to the Head of Sixth Form in advance.
