A level history online offers students who have an interest in the past and have an appreciation of human endeavour:
- A greater knowledge and understanding of historical periods or themes
- A greater awareness of historical concepts such as cause and effect, similarity and difference, and change and continuity
- An appreciation of the nature and diversity of historical sources available, and the methods used by historians
- An exploration of a variety of approaches to different aspects of history and different interpretations of particular historical issues
- The ability to think independently and make informed judgements on issues
- An empathy with people living in different places and at different times
- A firm foundation for further study of history
We follow the Pearson Edexcel International A-level course. At AS Level, History candidates study Unit 1: Depth Study with Interpretations, focusing on France in Revolution, 1774–99. Two essay questions that test their ability to evaluate different interpretations and understand historical significance. In Unit 2: Breadth Study with Source Evaluation, candidates examine Russia from 1917 to 1991, Lenin to Yeltsin. Two source-based questions and one essay question that assess their understanding of historical causation. At A Level, candidates complete Unit 3: Thematic Study with Source Evaluation, Germany from 1870 to 1990, including its unification, division, and reunification. One source-based question and one essay question that require critical evaluation. In Unit 4: International Study with Historical Interpretations, the making of modern Europe from 1805 to 1871. This unit includes an extract-based judgement question and an essay question that asks candidates to evaluate historical significance, causation, and different interpretations.
Prior learning
Candidates who are beginning this course should have previously completed an IGCSE course in History or the equivalent.
Progression
Cambridge International A level history online provides a suitable foundation for the study of history or related courses in higher education. Equally it is suitable for candidates intending to pursue careers or further study in arts, humanities and social science related areas (such as law), or as part of a course of general education.
