FAQs

Studying the IB online

In partnership with the International Baccalaureate® (IB), King’s InterHigh proudly offers the world’s first and only fully online course tailored for students aged 16-19 worldwide.

Studying the International Baccalaureate online takes place through a timetable of live and interactive classes taught every school day. Students will enjoy a full timetable of lessons and independent learning opportunities. Uniquely, lesson recordings are available at any time 24/7 to assist with revision, and allow you to catch up if you miss a lesson.

Leveraging cutting-edge technology like Virtual Reality (VR), the online IB Diploma curriculum provides immersive learning experiences that delve deep into subjects. Complementing this technological innovation is a team of expert teachers, boasting extensive experience in IB education from IB schools worldwide. The online curriculum is exciting and broad and certain to offer students a high-quality experience and internationally recognised qualifications. It is also dynamic and expansive, ensuring students receive a high-quality educational experience and globally recognised qualifications.

By studying the IB online, students worldwide gain access to this esteemed international qualification, irrespective of local school offerings. Joining the global King’s InterHigh community provides students with a range of virtual co-curricular activities, clubs, and pastoral care, alongside the invaluable guidance of IB specialist teachers.

King’s InterHigh is the world’s first school to offer the two-year International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme, for students aged 16-19, fully online. The international qualification is recognised worldwide by institutions and universities as a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for independent learning and future studies. It is firmly one of the best preparations students can have for future study at top universities.

The IB Diploma is an alternative education pathway to studying A Levels for Sixth Form students. The subjects covered within the curriculum are broader than the A Level British curriculum, so it can be a good choice for students who haven’t yet decided the avenue they would like to follow or for those wishing not to specialise too soon.

Studying the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) virtually, students will experience live lessons delivered by IB expert teachers, as well as the full guidance, support and pastoral care that you would expect in a physical school environment.

In an online IB programme, students will study the same IB curriculum that is taught across physical IB World Schools across the globe.

The subjects that students cover as part of the IB Diploma follow the same structure as that in physical schools. Over two years, students study six subjects of their choice, across the following subject groups:

  • Languages and Literature
  • Language Acquisition
  • Individuals and Societies
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • The Arts

Within these six subjects, there are advanced levels and standard levels. Students tend to study three subjects at an advanced level, and three at a standard level. Within the groups above, King’s InterHigh can offer different subjects to engage students in the learning they enjoy and want to pursue further.

In addition to this, all students will study the DP Core – an exciting programme that broadens students’ educational experience and challenges them to apply their knowledge and skills.

1. Theory of knowledge (ToK) is a taught unit that develops critical thinking and learning across their chosen subjects. Students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know, with significant benefits to their wider studies.

2. The extended essay (EE) is an independent, self-directed piece of research that allows students to further investigate an area of interest. It also enables students to develop their Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) components, which are necessary to complete as part of their IB programme.

Creativity, activity and service (CAS) is one of the three essential elements that all students must complete as part of the core section of the Diploma Programme. It is not formally assessed, yet involves a range of activities from which students provide evidence of achieving the seven learning outcomes. This includes projects such as: creating artwork, organising training for a sports team, volunteering in the local community, working on charity projects or learning a new skill.

As part of any IB programme, CAS activities are mostly conducted independently by the learner, guided and supported by a dedicated CAS coordinator. This is no different within an online setting – our dedicated coordinator will support students’ projects wherever they are in the world, and they will perform and document the activities in their local environment, to form the evidence for the CAS portfolio.

A student doing the full IB Diploma will sit an exam for each of their six subjects, taken during May in the second year. IB final exams typically make up about 75% of the students’ final course mark, but the exact percentage varies from course to course. The remaining element is made up of coursework or portfolio work.

For the two-year IB Diploma course, students will commence their studies online at the beginning of the academic year in September – we cannot accept new joiners past the end of October. However, our A Level courses retain the option to join at any time.

To progress in your enrolment, students will also have to provide evidence of meeting the entry requirements. To discuss the IBDP application process further, you can contact us here.

The next steps

How would you like to get in touch?

VAT charges explained

The UK Government has implemented a policy to charge VAT on independent schools taking effect from the 1st of January 2025. This VAT charge is payable by families who are based in, or access, King’s InterHigh from the UK. This change does not impact families who are based outside the UK and access King’s InterHigh from another country.

We understand the significant financial commitment you make in choosing our online school as well as how important it is to be able to financially plan. After careful review of the details of the legislation, we will support parents by absorbing costs ourselves, so that a slower phasing in of this unwelcome change reduces its financial impact on families.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year (starting September 2024), Inspired Education Group will absorb much of the 20% VAT charge. For the Spring and Summer terms when the 20% VAT will now apply, we will only pass on 8.5% to families, taking up the difference ourselves.

To further support families with the financial implications of this change in government policy, for the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in September 2025) there will be no inflationary tuition fee increases, and that Inspired Education Group will continue to absorb costs to limit the increase to 8.5% for that academic year. Overall, this will mean we have phased in 17% of the 20% VAT cost over two years to avoid sudden increases for families and have not increased tuition fees.

King’s InterHigh is committed to offering competitive fees and accessible, high-quality independent education, along with the unique benefits of online learning. We are pleased that through careful cost control and the benefits of being part of Inspired, the leading global group of premium schools, we can significantly reduce the financial effect on families due to this change in UK VAT policy.

Technology integration fee

At Inspired, we are committed to investing in cutting-edge technology to enhance student learning and development, ensuring they are well-prepared for the future. This fee will contribute to the development of our Inspired AI tools and our investment in best-in-class learning technology.
