About this course

Classical Studies A-Level Online Course Overview

Cambridge International A-Level Classical Studies provides learners with an understanding of the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome, and an appreciation of the diversity of the Classical world.

The syllabus exposes learners to a range of original sources (textual, material, archaeological) and develops their abilities to interpret, analyse and evaluate a range of evidence. All sources are studied in English, and no prior knowledge of Greek or Latin is required.

Classical Studies is relevant and useful to today’s learners because:

  • it offers the chance to gain knowledge and understanding of important milestones in the ancient world such as development of art, philosophy, literature and democracy
  • it helps students to make links and connections to our modern world, understanding the origins of much of our own culture and thinking
  • it supplements and supports the study of other disciplines such as Law, Biology, English Literature and History
  • it helps to develop literacy and oracy and broadens the knowledge of the English language as well as modern foreign languages through the study of some Latin and Greek keywords and their etymology/modern derivatives
  • it teaches transferable skills sought by employers in a wide range of careers, such as critical thinking, analysis of different evidence and interpretations, academic/formal written skills, independent thinking and problem-solving skills.

Prior Learning

Candidates beginning this course are not expected to have taken any Classical Studies-related courses previously. It is recommended that candidates beginning this course have an IGCSE or equivalent in English Language.

Progression

A-Level Classical Studies provides a suitable foundation for the study of Classical Studies or related courses in higher education. Equally, it is suitable for candidates intending to pursue careers or further study in archaeology, arts and humanities, or as part of a course of general education.

In October of years 11, 12 and 13, parents and guardians will receive an email asking which exams the learner intends to take, and where they would like to take them. Parents and guardians must inform King’s InterHigh if they need assistance finding an exam centre by mid-October.

King’s InterHigh can help you find a local exam centre. It is then down to the individual to register with the centre of choice and pay the exam fees directly to the centre. As each exam centre sets its own fees, we cannot provide accurate pricing; however, as an example, you can see our own fees by clicking here.

VAT charges explained

The UK Government has implemented a policy to charge VAT on independent schools taking effect from the 1st of January 2025. This VAT charge is payable by families who are based in, or access, King’s InterHigh from the UK. This change does not impact families who are based outside the UK and access King’s InterHigh from another country.

We understand the significant financial commitment you make in choosing our online school as well as how important it is to be able to financially plan. After careful review of the details of the legislation, we will support parents by absorbing costs ourselves, so that a slower phasing in of this unwelcome change reduces its financial impact on families.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year (starting September 2024), Inspired Education Group will absorb much of the 20% VAT charge. For the Spring and Summer terms when the 20% VAT will now apply, we will only pass on 8.5% to families, taking up the difference ourselves.

To further support families with the financial implications of this change in government policy, for the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in September 2025) there will be no inflationary tuition fee increases, and that Inspired Education Group will continue to absorb costs to limit the increase to 8.5% for that academic year. Overall, this will mean we have phased in 17% of the 20% VAT cost over two years to avoid sudden increases for families and have not increased tuition fees.

King’s InterHigh is committed to offering competitive fees and accessible, high-quality independent education, along with the unique benefits of online learning. We are pleased that through careful cost control and the benefits of being part of Inspired, the leading global group of premium schools, we can significantly reduce the financial effect on families due to this change in UK VAT policy.
