Learning without borders: Jacob’s story

By King's InterHigh

For the Alles family, education has always meant more than just lessons and exams. Living in the vibrant surroundings of Sri Lanka, their son Jacob—a creative and curious Year 3 pupil with a passion for drawing, LEGO, and all things tech—once greeted school with excitement. But when bullying and frequent illness became part of daily life, that enthusiasm began to fade.

“Our child was bullied at his previous school and frequently fell ill, as other children were often sent to school while unwell,” his parents explain. “Due to the persistent bullying—and the fact that the teachers did not take his complaints seriously, he began refusing to attend school.” Even when he did attend, his parents report him being visibly unhappy.

Discovering a new way to learn

Determined to restore their son’s love of learning and get him as excited about education “as he was on his very first day of school,” the family began exploring alternatives, and found King’s InterHigh. “We researched many online schools,” they say, “but this was the only one that truly stood out. There was a large number of positive reviews, and the teaching system and curriculum really appealed to us.”

Now, Jacob is thriving. His teachers, who are all UK and internationally qualified to deliver a structured British curriculum, have created a learning environment where every child is encouraged to shine. “We really appreciate how all his teachers approach the children, helping each one to shine in their own unique way,” his parents share.

Jacob loves his teachers too, and the difference in classroom culture has been profound.  “Our child loves the way the teachers speak and how kind they are. Even when a pupil gives a wrong answer, the teachers don’t scold them but guide them patiently.” This is a quality that, according to his parents, Jacob truly appreciates.

The environment of inclusion and respect extends to the students themselves too. With a vibrant and global community spanning 133 countries, King’s InterHigh students can meet like-minded peers and feel safe and understood by young people of their own age.

Learning without borders

Studying from Sri Lanka, the family has found additional advantages in online schooling. Access to experienced UK teachers and a globally recognised qualification has given Jacob a strong academic foundation, without sacrificing health or happiness. “The British curriculum is renowned for its clear structure and academic rigour, which helps students develop strong critical thinking skills and a solid foundation for future success,” they say. This, for the Alles family, is a distinct advantage.  “We believe it often produces learners who are more capable and better prepared than many other educational systems.”

With flexibility built into the day, Jacob still has plenty of time to pursue his interests—from swimming and tennis to animals and vehicles—all while progressing confidently through school.

Plans for Jacob’s future

For the Alles family, joining King’s InterHigh wasn’t just a short-term solution—it was the beginning of a long-term journey. They’re now planning for Jacob to continue through the school all the way to A Levels, confident that they’ve found an environment where he can flourish both academically and personally.

“We have decided to continue with King’s InterHigh and successfully complete the A-level examinations,” they share. With a strong foundation already being built in Key Stage 2, they’re reassured knowing that the same quality of teaching, structured British curriculum, and supportive approach will carry Jacob through each new stage of his education.

And just as importantly, the flexibility of online learning gives Jacob the freedom to grow beyond the classroom—whether that’s deepening his love of technology, diving into sports, or spending more time doing what he loves most: building and creating.

A word to other families in Southeast Asia

To other families across the Asia Pacific region who may be exploring their educational options, the Alles family offers heartfelt encouragement to consider a new way of learning.

“King’s InterHigh offers a well-structured British curriculum delivered by highly qualified UK teachers who are both skilled and supportive in guiding students,” they explain. “It’s an excellent option for families seeking quality education with global recognition, all from the comfort and flexibility of home.”

With access to a British education regardless of location, families can unlock a world of opportunity—while ensuring their children feel safe, motivated, and seen. And with new Key Stage 2 classes now available in our Southeast Asia time zone, younger learners across the region can benefit from live, interactive lessons that fit their day-to-day routines.

VAT charges explained

The UK Government has implemented a policy to charge VAT on independent schools taking effect from the 1st of January 2025. This VAT charge is payable by families who are based in, or access, King’s InterHigh from the UK. This change does not impact families who are based outside the UK and access King’s InterHigh from another country.

We understand the significant financial commitment you make in choosing our online school as well as how important it is to be able to financially plan. After careful review of the details of the legislation, we will support parents by absorbing costs ourselves, so that a slower phasing in of this unwelcome change reduces its financial impact on families.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year (starting September 2024), Inspired Education Group will absorb much of the 20% VAT charge. For the Spring and Summer terms when the 20% VAT will now apply, we will only pass on 8.5% to families, taking up the difference ourselves.

To further support families with the financial implications of this change in government policy, for the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in September 2025) there will be no inflationary tuition fee increases, and that Inspired Education Group will continue to absorb costs to limit the increase to 8.5% for that academic year. Overall, this will mean we have phased in 17% of the 20% VAT cost over two years to avoid sudden increases for families and have not increased tuition fees.

King’s InterHigh is committed to offering competitive fees and accessible, high-quality independent education, along with the unique benefits of online learning. We are pleased that through careful cost control and the benefits of being part of Inspired, the leading global group of premium schools, we can significantly reduce the financial effect on families due to this change in UK VAT policy.
