IGCSE English FAQs

GCSE English Language focuses on developing your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. You’ll look at syntax, morphology and phonology. You’ll come across a range of texts to analyse, learning how language is used to communicate messages with readers.

The course covers topics including:

  • Creative reading and writing
  • Fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Using English
  • Presenting
  • Responding to questions and feedback

English Literature focuses on developing students’ understanding of prose, poetry, and drama. You’ll explore cultures and societies through literature and learn to appreciate how writers use literary effects to tell their stories and trigger emotional reactions.

Yes, you can study GCSE English online and gain the exact same GCSE English qualification, without having to attend a physical school.

With online learning, you can study GCSE English at a pace that suits you. You can fit your learning around your lifestyle and other commitments, whether this be hobbies, travelling, or a career.

As long as the course is accredited by a recognised exam board, such as AQA, Edexcel or Pearson, you can apply for this and study wherever and whenever you like. All you need is an internet connection.

Online GCSE English lessons are delivered through interactive, virtual classrooms. Teachers engage with students directly, and learners have opportunities to work together in breakout rooms to solve problems and reflect on classes. This fosters a sense of community and helps students to develop their communication and problem-solving skills.

You’ll need to have passed GCSE English and Maths to qualify for many higher education courses. However, universities and colleges set their own entry criteria. You should check the specific requirements with each institution you’re thinking of studying at.

GCSE English has two passes. A grade 4 makes a standard pass, while a grade 5 makes a strong pass.

The numbers grading system replaced the letters grading system in the UK in 2017. A strong pass of grade 5 or above is equivalent to a high-grade C or above, while a standard pass of up to grade 4 is equivalent to a low grade C and below.

You can study to resit your English GCSE online or at a traditional school. Studying online gives you flexibility, and the freedom to choose where and when you learn.

You may choose to resit your English GCSE exam to achieve a higher mark, as many higher learning institutions require a pass. In some cases, A Level course providers may let you resit GCSE English alongside your other exams. However, you should check this with the course provider and make time to revise these subjects again ahead of your resits.

Most college and university courses will require you to have passed GCSE English (Language) with at least grade 4. Some courses may require the same grade for English Literature. It is worth checking with the college or university with your preferred course what their requirements are.

Students will cover the following modules in GCSE English Edexcel:

  • Non-Fiction Texts
  • Contemporary Texts
  • Spoken Language Endorsements

The Non-Fiction Texts and Contemporary Texts modules are assessed through written exams. The Spoken Languages Endorsements module is assessed through the delivery of a live presentation.

VAT charges explained

The UK Government has implemented a policy to charge VAT on independent schools taking effect from the 1st of January 2025. This VAT charge is payable by families who are based in, or access, King’s InterHigh from the UK. This change does not impact families who are based outside the UK and access King’s InterHigh from another country.

We understand the significant financial commitment you make in choosing our online school as well as how important it is to be able to financially plan. After careful review of the details of the legislation, we will support parents by absorbing costs ourselves, so that a slower phasing in of this unwelcome change reduces its financial impact on families.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year (starting September 2024), Inspired Education Group will absorb much of the 20% VAT charge. For the Spring and Summer terms when the 20% VAT will now apply, we will only pass on 8.5% to families, taking up the difference ourselves.

To further support families with the financial implications of this change in government policy, for the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in September 2025) there will be no inflationary tuition fee increases, and that Inspired Education Group will continue to absorb costs to limit the increase to 8.5% for that academic year. Overall, this will mean we have phased in 17% of the 20% VAT cost over two years to avoid sudden increases for families and have not increased tuition fees.

King’s InterHigh is committed to offering competitive fees and accessible, high-quality independent education, along with the unique benefits of online learning. We are pleased that through careful cost control and the benefits of being part of Inspired, the leading global group of premium schools, we can significantly reduce the financial effect on families due to this change in UK VAT policy.

Technology integration fee

At Inspired, we are committed to investing in cutting-edge technology to enhance student learning and development, ensuring they are well-prepared for the future. This fee will contribute to the development of our Inspired AI tools and our investment in best-in-class learning technology.
