Colin Jackson opens our new exam centre

By King's InterHigh

Athletics legend Colin Jackson officially opened King’s InterHigh’s new exam centre in Abergavenny.

Mr Jackson, a former double world champion 110 metre hurdler and world record holder, was invited to open the centre as part of his new role as the school’s ambassador.

He was joined by over 40 guests at the opening, including King’s InterHigh pupils, parents, teachers and local dignitaries including the Mayor of Abergavenny Teslin Davies and Monmouth MP David Davies.

Mr Jackson said he was impressed by the new exam centre and honoured to officially open the facility. He said he hoped the centre would have a “positive” impact for the students taking their exams there and on the local area.

“I think the exam centre itself is really something that should be exciting for everybody,” he said.

“It is very positive and can have knock on effects for so many people, not just for now at this particular moment in time, but for the future, so you have to be excited.

“It’s a real pleasure and a genuine honour to be able to open the new exam centre. I’m very happy to be here. It looks amazing,” he said.

The new centre will serve King’s InterHigh pupils alongside our existing exam facility at our head office in Crickhowell.

One of just a few private exam centres in Wales, the new facility offers students a peaceful, stress-free environment and will also be opened up for private candidates and children in home education to use.

Wey Education CEO and InterHigh co-founder, Jacqueline Daniel said:

“There is a shortage of exam centres, particularly in this part of the world, so it’s giving accessibility to students who would otherwise have to travel quite some distance. Abergavenny is easily accessible with rail and public transport links.

“We are also going to open it to external students because the home education community have great difficulty in finding exam centres that will take their children, particularly anxious children. This is a small centre with individual rooms, they’ll get the personal attention, so hopefully we can make it as stress-free as possible.”

King’s InterHigh is an independent British international online school. Offering Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form education, we cater to students from age 7 – 18 who are looking for a high quality British education delivered in a way that revolves around their lifestyle.

VAT charges explained

The UK Government has implemented a policy to charge VAT on independent schools taking effect from the 1st of January 2025. This VAT charge is payable by families who are based in, or access, King’s InterHigh from the UK. This change does not impact families who are based outside the UK and access King’s InterHigh from another country.

We understand the significant financial commitment you make in choosing our online school as well as how important it is to be able to financially plan. After careful review of the details of the legislation, we will support parents by absorbing costs ourselves, so that a slower phasing in of this unwelcome change reduces its financial impact on families.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year (starting September 2024), Inspired Education Group will absorb much of the 20% VAT charge. For the Spring and Summer terms when the 20% VAT will now apply, we will only pass on 8.5% to families, taking up the difference ourselves.

To further support families with the financial implications of this change in government policy, for the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in September 2025) there will be no inflationary tuition fee increases, and that Inspired Education Group will continue to absorb costs to limit the increase to 8.5% for that academic year. Overall, this will mean we have phased in 17% of the 20% VAT cost over two years to avoid sudden increases for families and have not increased tuition fees.

King’s InterHigh is committed to offering competitive fees and accessible, high-quality independent education, along with the unique benefits of online learning. We are pleased that through careful cost control and the benefits of being part of Inspired, the leading global group of premium schools, we can significantly reduce the financial effect on families due to this change in UK VAT policy.
