About this course

IGCSE Art & Design - Fine Art online course

The iGCSE in Art and Design, Fine Art aims to support student development of a unique creative response through engagement with sustained and independent enquiry on this 100% online course. Students can choose to focus on drawing, lens/light-based media, mixed-media, printing, painting, or sculpture to explore an idea, convey an experience, or respond to a theme. Fine Art is often defined as a counterbalance to craft or work produced in the creative industries. It creates opportunities to communicate aesthetic, intellectual or purely conceptual ideas and meaning.

Students will demonstrate an understanding and application of the formal elements and principles of art and design in their artmaking which can be the outcome of personal experience alongside response to observation in new and unique ways. This course supports the development of students’ verbal, written and visual communication skills, encouraging a personal response by stimulating imagination, sensitivity, and conceptual thinking. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate critical thinking and communicate for different purposes, expressing their opinions, persuading others, discussing ideas, and debating real-world issues. Students will gain contextual knowledge by understanding historical and contemporary art, craft, and design practice from different cultures, to demonstrate an understanding of continuity and change in fine art.

Students will:

  1. Undertake visual research, using primary and secondary sources, and record observations, experiences, and ideas
  2. Develop and realise ideas, exploring and reviewing possible solutions and modifying work
  3. Use a range of materials, equipment, processes, and techniques in 2D and/or 3D, using ICT and technology
  4. Know and understand a range of work, from contemporary practice, past practice, and different cultures, to demonstrate an understanding of continuity and change in art, craft, and design.

Students will explore:

  • The use of formal elements and visual communication through a variety of approaches
  • The use of observational skills to record from sources and communicate ideas
  • Characteristics of media and materials such as wet and dry, malleable, resistant, and digital
  • Properties of colour and light such as hue, tint, saturation, and tone
  • The effects and creative potential of combining and manipulating different two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials and media
  • The use of digital and/or non-digital applications.

Teachers make use of the webcam feature and their document camera each week to guide students through various skills and techniques. The completed pieces of art that are produced by the students are shared digitally for viewing and feedback. Students will be required to keep their cameras on to view the progress of work during practical studio time so that assessors can moderate and authenticate. Component 2 includes the externally set assignment under 10-hours of exam conditions. This will likewise be delivered 100% online under exam conditions split into two date-stamped and authenticated 5-hour invigilated sessions.

To be eligible for this qualification, you must understand and agree to the course requirements:

  • Live Attendance: Candidates are required to attend lessons live, meeting a minimum live and on-camera attendance requirement for authentication. This is essential for submitting work for the qualification. Candidates must attend at least 5 live lessons per term in Year 10 and 11, with their camera or screenshare on to clearly show work development. Regular uploads and engagement with feedback are also necessary. The final decision on eligibility rests with each class teacher based on their observations.
  • Camera or Screenshare: During practical sessions, candidates must keep a separate webcam or screenshare on at all times, ensuring their work development is visible. Teachers need to see candidates working on their portfolio live, not just their face.
  • Printer Access: Access to a printer is required for candidates to print resource imagery and other materials as needed.
  • Basic Art Kit: Candidates must have a basic art kit as a minimum requirement for this course. Additional resources and supplies may be needed throughout.
  • Assignment Submission: Candidates should submit their work for assignments when required and keep their PowerPoint portfolio updated weekly with progress photos and documentation.
  • Appropriate Content: Candidates must ensure their work does not damage the environment or include inappropriate content. Their work must align with King’s InterHigh and Inspired school values and be suitable for an international audience, including younger viewers. Inappropriate work may be removed from their portfolio and submission.
  • Academic Integrity: All submitted work must be authenticated by a teacher and free from academic misconduct, including the use of AI presented as candidates’ own work. If candidates use content from any source, including AI or software like generative image fill in Photoshop, these sources must be acknowledged according to the school’s academic honesty policy.
  • Previous Work Authentication: If candidates have work from a previous setting from another GCSE level qualification, they are responsible for obtaining an authentication document to verify it as their own. It can be used for Component 1 only if appropriate and must still be verified by comparison with work completed at King’s InterHigh.

VAT charges explained

The UK Government has implemented a policy to charge VAT on independent schools taking effect from the 1st of January 2025. This VAT charge is payable by families who are based in, or access, King’s InterHigh from the UK. This change does not impact families who are based outside the UK and access King’s InterHigh from another country.

We understand the significant financial commitment you make in choosing our online school as well as how important it is to be able to financially plan. After careful review of the details of the legislation, we will support parents by absorbing costs ourselves, so that a slower phasing in of this unwelcome change reduces its financial impact on families.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year (starting September 2024), Inspired Education Group will absorb much of the 20% VAT charge. For the Spring and Summer terms when the 20% VAT will now apply, we will only pass on 8.5% to families, taking up the difference ourselves.

To further support families with the financial implications of this change in government policy, for the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in September 2025) there will be no inflationary tuition fee increases, and that Inspired Education Group will continue to absorb costs to limit the increase to 8.5% for that academic year. Overall, this will mean we have phased in 17% of the 20% VAT cost over two years to avoid sudden increases for families and have not increased tuition fees.

King’s InterHigh is committed to offering competitive fees and accessible, high-quality independent education, along with the unique benefits of online learning. We are pleased that through careful cost control and the benefits of being part of Inspired, the leading global group of premium schools, we can significantly reduce the financial effect on families due to this change in UK VAT policy.
