Catching up with our alumni: Amber’s journey after King’s InterHigh

Amber joined King’s InterHigh back in 2013, halfway through her Year 9 studies. When she graduated from our online school community in 2017, she left armed with A grades in A Level English Literature and Media Studies, setting her on a path to working in a creative field one day.

Today, Amber is a Publicity Executive for Waitrose and John Lewis. We caught up with her to learn more about why she joined King’s InterHigh, what she gained, and how it’s helped her on her journey after school.

 What first led you to choose King’s InterHigh, and how did it suit your education needs at the time?

Halfway through secondary school I began to struggle with anxiety, to the point where I could no longer physically go to school. King’s InterHigh seemed like the perfect solution, allowing my education to continue at a high standard whilst giving me the time and space to work on my mental health.

 Do you have a favourite memory or highlight from your time at King’s InterHigh?

Thanks to King's InterHigh's flexibility, I was able to explore my own interests and entrepreneurship whilst studying, which really helped my development and my career.

I also enjoyed getting to know people from all over the world and shared classes with some interesting people, some of whom were travelling, or working in fascinating careers.

 How did studying with us help prepare you for your next steps after school?

I didn’t know it then but King’s InterHigh was ahead of its time and greatly prepared me for a future of remote and hybrid working! Most people experienced this for the first time during COVID, but I felt lucky to have already got used to this way of working several years beforehand thanks to King’s InterHigh.

Whilst some people still struggle with remote and hybrid working, or managing their own time and staying disciplined, I had the opportunity to adapt to this way of working years earlier than most.

 Once you left King’s InterHigh, what were your next steps?

I continued freelance writing for global publications, something I started doing while at King's InterHigh. I also completed a marketing and publicity internship at Little Tiger (a publishing house in London).

I later joined my local Waitrose as a Supermarket Assistant, where I quickly worked my way up to Head Office, joining the Waitrose Social Marketing team. As part of that role, I got to work on national campaigns and new product launches. My favourite project included training over 200 shop-based employees to launch social media accounts for their shops. It was such a fun project that led to incredible results and they’re all still going today!

 And where are you now?

After a couple of years in the Waitrose Social Marketing team, I became a Publicity Executive for Waitrose and John Lewis where I manage internal digital marketing. No day is the same, and my work spans everything from graphic design, website management and copywriting to social media, email marketing, video editing, and more. I love the variety!

When I have time off, I love to travel the world and experience other cultures.

 What advice would you give to current or future King’s InterHigh students?

Someone once told me that ‘the jobs that will be available to you in the future may not exist yet’ — and that ended up being true for me, as social media was nowhere near as big as it is now.

Do your best, maintain your discipline, learn as much as you can, and keep an open mind — you are potentially working towards something you can’t yet imagine!

King’s InterHigh is an independent British international online school. Offering Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form education, we cater to students from age 7 – 18 who are looking for a high quality British education delivered in a way that revolves around their lifestyle.

VAT charges explained

The UK Government has implemented a policy to charge VAT on independent schools taking effect from the 1st of January 2025. This VAT charge is payable by families who are based in, or access, King’s InterHigh from the UK. This change does not impact families who are based outside the UK and access King’s InterHigh from another country.

We understand the significant financial commitment you make in choosing our online school as well as how important it is to be able to financially plan. After careful review of the details of the legislation, we will support parents by absorbing costs ourselves, so that a slower phasing in of this unwelcome change reduces its financial impact on families.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year (starting September 2024), Inspired Education Group will absorb much of the 20% VAT charge. For the Spring and Summer terms when the 20% VAT will now apply, we will only pass on 8.5% to families, taking up the difference ourselves.

To further support families with the financial implications of this change in government policy, for the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in September 2025) there will be no inflationary tuition fee increases, and that Inspired Education Group will continue to absorb costs to limit the increase to 8.5% for that academic year. Overall, this will mean we have phased in 17% of the 20% VAT cost over two years to avoid sudden increases for families and have not increased tuition fees.
