Online science in action: Inspiring young innovators at King’s InterHigh

By King's InterHigh

In celebration of our recent British Science Week activities, King's InterHigh's Head of Science, Pete White, explains how we inspire the next generation of innovators with online learning.

In the digital age, the landscape of education is rapidly evolving, and science education is no exception.

With the advent of online learning platforms, students now have unprecedented access to scientific knowledge and experimentation. This transformation is not just about making science more accessible; it’s about inspiring the next generation of innovators by pushing the boundaries of what is possible in science education.

At King’s InterHigh, we are at the forefront of this revolution, using technology to engage students in ways that were unimaginable just a few years ago.

The rise of tech in science education

The global shift towards online learning has been accelerated by recent events, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a report by the World Economic Forum, over 1.2 billion children in 186 countries were affected by school closures during the pandemic, leading to a significant increase in the adoption of online learning platforms.

This shift has opened up new opportunities for science education, allowing students to access high-quality resources and interact with scientific concepts in innovative ways.

Online science at King’s InterHigh

At King’s InterHigh, we’ve been leading the way in online learning for almost 20 years, drawing in a vast global community of students long before the long before the pandemic-driven shift. In that time, we’ve been able to design and optimise an approach to online science teaching that helps take learning to the next level.

How we make science innovative

Technology is not just a tool for delivering content; it is a catalyst for innovation in science education.

Virtual labs, simulations, and interactive modules allow students to conduct experiments and explore scientific phenomena in a safe and controlled environment. These tools provide a level of engagement and interactivity that traditional classroom settings often struggle to achieve.

At King’s InterHigh, we leverage cutting-edge technology to bring science to life for our students. Our virtual labs and simulations are a cornerstone of our science curriculum, allowing students to conduct experiments and explore scientific concepts in a virtual environment. These tools provide a hands-on experience that is both engaging and educational.

One of the many immersive virtual spaces where our students can deep-dive into scientific concepts.

How we make science collaborative

Competitions are another powerful way to inspire young innovators and foster a love for science. At King’s InterHigh, we host a variety of science contests that challenge students to apply their knowledge and creativity to solve real-world problems. These competitions are designed to encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation.

We are currently running a ‘Feed our Future’ STEM challenge, for example, as well as a recent poster competition through British Science Week for our sixth form students.

Our sixth form students also gather together in-person for their science practical assessments.

How we make science inclusive

What’s particularly rewarding about online science education is the potential to bridge the gap in access to quality science education — particularly for students in remote or underserved areas as well as young people who struggle to learn in a traditional classroom setting.

By providing access to high-quality resources and interactive learning experiences, online platforms can help level the playing field and ensure that all students have the opportunity to pursue their passion for science.

Many King’s InterHigh alumni like Owen, for example, choose to learn with us as a pathway to study sciences at university while living abroad. Others, like Angharad, have been able to pursue their scientific passions and get a full, immersive education around their health needs, which may not have been possible without online learning.

Why online science learning is so valuable

Our families choose virtual learning for a wide array of reasons, but studying online isn’t just an alternative way to get an education. With cutting-edge tech platforms and a more flexible, personalised approach to learning, students are often able to gain advantages beyond what they’d find in a typical in-person school.

A study published in the Journal of Science Education and Technology found that students who participated in online science courses demonstrated significant improvements in their understanding of scientific concepts and their ability to apply scientific reasoning. This suggests that online science education can be an effective tool for enhancing student learning and engagement.

One of the most important goals of science education is to foster a love for science and inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields. Online science education also provides students with the opportunity to explore their interests and discover the wonders of science in a way that is both engaging and accessible.

Our vision for the future of science

At King’s InterHigh, we have seen firsthand the impact of online science education on our students.

Many of our students have gone on to pursue degrees in science and engineering, driven by the passion and curiosity they developed during their time with us. Our alumni include successful scientists, engineers, and innovators who are making significant contributions to their fields. Take alumnus Kieran Bjergstrom, for example, who is now a doctor of quantum physics and an entrepreneur in the quantum engineering space.

The digital transformation of science education is opening up new possibilities for inspiring young innovators. At King’s InterHigh, we are committed to using technology to push the boundaries of science education and provide our students with the tools and experiences they need to succeed in the 21st century. By leveraging virtual labs, interactive competitions, and global collaborations, we are not only enhancing the learning experience but also inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators.

As we continue to explore the potential of online science education, we remain dedicated to our mission of inspiring young minds and fostering a love for science. With the right tools and support, we believe that every student has the potential to become a leader in the world of science and technology.

By embracing the possibilities of online science education, we are not only preparing our students for the future but also inspiring them to shape it.

King’s InterHigh is an independent British international online school. Offering Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form education, we cater to students from age 7 – 18 who are looking for a high quality British education delivered in a way that revolves around their lifestyle.

VAT charges explained

The UK Government has implemented a policy to charge VAT on independent schools taking effect from the 1st of January 2025. This VAT charge is payable by families who are based in, or access, King’s InterHigh from the UK. This change does not impact families who are based outside the UK and access King’s InterHigh from another country.

We understand the significant financial commitment you make in choosing our online school as well as how important it is to be able to financially plan. After careful review of the details of the legislation, we will support parents by absorbing costs ourselves, so that a slower phasing in of this unwelcome change reduces its financial impact on families.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year (starting September 2024), Inspired Education Group will absorb much of the 20% VAT charge. For the Spring and Summer terms when the 20% VAT will now apply, we will only pass on 8.5% to families, taking up the difference ourselves.

To further support families with the financial implications of this change in government policy, for the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in September 2025) there will be no inflationary tuition fee increases, and that Inspired Education Group will continue to absorb costs to limit the increase to 8.5% for that academic year. Overall, this will mean we have phased in 17% of the 20% VAT cost over two years to avoid sudden increases for families and have not increased tuition fees.

King’s InterHigh is committed to offering competitive fees and accessible, high-quality independent education, along with the unique benefits of online learning. We are pleased that through careful cost control and the benefits of being part of Inspired, the leading global group of premium schools, we can significantly reduce the financial effect on families due to this change in UK VAT policy.
