Mindfulness for children: Stepping into 2025 with our primary students

By Penny Alston

As we step into 2025, we find ourselves standing at the cusp of new beginnings and exciting opportunities for our Primary children at King’s InterHigh.

The start of a new year is often synonymous with setting goals and resolutions, aiming to be better versions of ourselves. While many may refer to these as New Year’s resolutions, we have embraced a school-wide mantra focused on mindfulness and self-care, ensuring our children develop these crucial skills from a young age.

Nurturing young minds

In our online primary school, the staff and I are dedicated to fostering a love of learning among our children. It is about igniting curiosity and sparking a lifelong passion for discovery. Positive reinforcement from teachers, parents, and carers plays a pivotal role in this journey. Recognizing the efforts and achievements of our children, no matter how small encourages them to set ambitious goals for themselves.

Our wonderful class teacher model is central to this nurturing environment. Each child has access to their dedicated class teacher, ensuring that every student is known and celebrated for their unique strengths. This model fosters a sense of belonging and pride, allowing children to feel like they are part of a larger family, where their individuality is appreciated.

A year dedicated to self-care

This year, our school resolution is centred around self-care, teaching students that caring for their mental and emotional wellbeing is just as important as their academic success. Mindfulness, at the heart of this approach, encourages students to be present and aware of their feelings, thoughts, and senses.

Components of mindfulness for children

  • Compassion and self-compassion: We teach children to be kind to themselves during challenging times. Emphasizing self-compassion helps children build resilience and confidence, allowing them to navigate mistakes with grace and maintain a positive self-image.
  • Positive thinking via self-talk: Children learn to replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations. For example, instead of saying, “I’m terrible at this,” they learn to tell themselves, “I can try again,” fostering a culture of perseverance and growth.
  • Gratitude and kindness: Acts of kindness are woven into the fabric of our school values. Students are encouraged to help others, offer compliments, and support friends in need. These small, daily acts instil happiness and self-acceptance.

Mindfulness practices for children at our online school

Throughout the year, our students will engage in mindfulness practices designed to calm their busy minds and provide a “warm hug” to their thoughts. Whether it’s pausing to reflect on their emotions or practising patience and understanding during difficult moments, these techniques promote emotional intelligence and wellbeing.

Encouraging self-care in daily lives

Self-care for children might include reading a much-loved book before bed, listening to soothing music, or indulging in creative activities like painting or storytelling. Physical activity, whether it’s dancing, biking, or playing outdoors, is also encouraged to support their holistic growth. Talking about feelings with trusted adults or friends reinforces the importance of openness and community support.

Celebrating uniqueness and growth

Our school assemblies are more than just announcements; they’re a celebration of each child’s uniqueness and achievements. By acknowledging their efforts and encouraging them to take pride in their accomplishments, we reinforce their sense of belonging and community pride.

Mindfulness as a superpower

As we embark on this journey through 2025, our focus remains on helping children understand that mindfulness is a superpower—a tool that keeps them calm, happy, and centred. Our message resounds with kindness and compassion for self and others, encouraging students to pursue goals that excite them and to embrace each step with joy and curiosity. A primary school is a marvellous beacon where every student is cherished, celebrated, and empowered to shine brightly.

Here's to another fabulous year.

VAT charges explained

The UK Government has implemented a policy to charge VAT on independent schools taking effect from the 1st of January 2025. This VAT charge is payable by families who are based in, or access, King’s InterHigh from the UK. This change does not impact families who are based outside the UK and access King’s InterHigh from another country.

We understand the significant financial commitment you make in choosing our online school as well as how important it is to be able to financially plan. After careful review of the details of the legislation, we will support parents by absorbing costs ourselves, so that a slower phasing in of this unwelcome change reduces its financial impact on families.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year (starting September 2024), Inspired Education Group will absorb much of the 20% VAT charge. For the Spring and Summer terms when the 20% VAT will now apply, we will only pass on 8.5% to families, taking up the difference ourselves.

To further support families with the financial implications of this change in government policy, for the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in September 2025) there will be no inflationary tuition fee increases, and that Inspired Education Group will continue to absorb costs to limit the increase to 8.5% for that academic year. Overall, this will mean we have phased in 17% of the 20% VAT cost over two years to avoid sudden increases for families and have not increased tuition fees.

King’s InterHigh is committed to offering competitive fees and accessible, high-quality independent education, along with the unique benefits of online learning. We are pleased that through careful cost control and the benefits of being part of Inspired, the leading global group of premium schools, we can significantly reduce the financial effect on families due to this change in UK VAT policy.
