The King’s InterHigh Bake-Off: Building connections through food
If you were among the 8 million viewers of The Great British Bake-Off in 2023, you may be following this year’s friendly, flour-dusted competition. Whether you’re an avid baker or a novice in the kitchen, it’s undeniable that food has a remarkable ability to bring people together. So, in the spirit of building this sense of connection, we hosted our very first King’s InterHigh Bake-Off this year!
Organised by our Key Stage 5 team, the competition was held throughout September and open to all Year 12, 13, and DP1+2 students. Participants were invited to showcase their baking skills with photos or videos of their entries.
Of course – it wouldn’t be a competition without judging. The assessment criteria were based on our school values, particularly:
- Belonging: contributing to a sense of community
- Curiosity and Creativity: sparking innovation and exploration in their creations
- Individuality: celebrating unique approaches
At King’s InterHigh, community is at the heart of everything we do. Beyond the virtual classroom, our students enjoy various activities that bring them together, from after-school clubs and meet-ups to school houses and friendly competitions. These experiences create a strong sense of belonging, allowing students to form friendships and feel fully engaged in our lively school community all year round.
Kath Thomas, Head of Year 12, shared, “We have been absolutely blown away by our students’ baking skills and creativity. This event was not only great fun but also a reminder of how talented and inventive our students are beyond academics. I loved seeing them take on this challenge with such enthusiasm.”
With so many incredible entries showcasing our students’ talent, this year’s King’s InterHigh Bake-Off had multiple winners for each year group. We’ve selected a few of the most impressive bakes to give you a taste of their creativity and skill:
