Celebrating GCSE Results 2023: Melanie

By King's InterHigh

With seven GCSEs at grade 7 and above now under her belt, Melanie is on track to achieve her long-term goals of going to medical school to become a psychiatrist. Here's her story.

"Schooling online has allowed me to learn independently, which I believe is a very important life skill to aid your future. Being at home, I had been given lots of freedom and I was in control of my actions, so I was given the chance to prove myself and had to stay dedicated and determined in order to succeed academically."

Why did you join King’s InterHigh, and what has your learning journey with us meant to you?

I joined King's InterHigh due to COVID. King's InterHigh seemed like the best option for me to continue studying during a difficult time, where my learning wasn't affected negatively but instead it thrived and allowed me to be the best version of myself. I loved studying at King's InterHigh, not only for the amazing teachers and interactive classes, but for the flexibility. One thing that I really loved was being able to reach out to my teachers and ask questions, they were all highly responsive and gave detailed answers even outside of the school day. The one-on-one communication really helped me personally, to be curious and seek answers for anything anytime.

What's something you've gained from King's InterHigh that's really helped you personally?

Schooling online has allowed me to learn independently, which I believe is a very important life skill to aid your future. Being at home, I had been given lots of freedom and I was in control of my actions, so I was given the chance to prove myself and had to stay dedicated and determined in order to succeed academically.

Is there something you’ve learned from King’s InterHigh that’s special to online learning or your situation?

When COVID first started, my previous school was unprepared and so I missed out on lessons and coursework. However, with King's InterHigh, it meant that regardless of the situation with schools being closed or disrupted by COVID, it didn't affect me, allowing my education to thrive.

Has studying online allowed you to explore new interests?

Definitely. Due to King's InterHigh's flexibility, I had time to discover new hobbies and interests such as making music, crochet, cooking, exercising and more, while still attending lessons and revising in my spare time.

What are your dreams for the future?

I wish to complete my A levels in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Psychology and go to medical school to become a doctor, specifically a psychiatrist. King's InterHigh has helped me thrive with my education, by giving me independence and teaching me essential life skills that will help my future and allow me to help others.

King’s InterHigh is an independent British international online school. Offering Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form education, we cater to students from age 7 – 18 who are looking for a high quality British education delivered in a way that revolves around their lifestyle.

VAT charges explained

The UK Government has implemented a policy to charge VAT on independent schools taking effect from the 1st of January 2025. This VAT charge is payable by families who are based in, or access, King’s InterHigh from the UK. This change does not impact families who are based outside the UK and access King’s InterHigh from another country.

We understand the significant financial commitment you make in choosing our online school as well as how important it is to be able to financially plan. After careful review of the details of the legislation, we will support parents by absorbing costs ourselves, so that a slower phasing in of this unwelcome change reduces its financial impact on families.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year (starting September 2024), Inspired Education Group will absorb much of the 20% VAT charge. For the Spring and Summer terms when the 20% VAT will now apply, we will only pass on 8.5% to families, taking up the difference ourselves.

To further support families with the financial implications of this change in government policy, for the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in September 2025) there will be no inflationary tuition fee increases, and that Inspired Education Group will continue to absorb costs to limit the increase to 8.5% for that academic year. Overall, this will mean we have phased in 17% of the 20% VAT cost over two years to avoid sudden increases for families and have not increased tuition fees.

King’s InterHigh is committed to offering competitive fees and accessible, high-quality independent education, along with the unique benefits of online learning. We are pleased that through careful cost control and the benefits of being part of Inspired, the leading global group of premium schools, we can significantly reduce the financial effect on families due to this change in UK VAT policy.
