A day in the life of Auriane – show jumping champion and online school student

By King's InterHigh

Online schooling is perfect for young horse riding champion Auriane Dupont, who has lived around the world from Dubai to France. Auriane joined us as her show jumping career began ramping up, when her family realised that virtual learning was a much better fit for her training schedule.

Now, she has more time to spend with her horses and more time to follow her passion. Keep reading to find out what a typical day looks like for Auriane as she balances competitions with classes.

Auriane Dupont

Auriane’s exciting life

Auriane has been riding horses ever since she was six years old, first starting out with one riding session per week. Then, just over a year ago, she was bitten by the show jumping bug. “I really started to give riding my all 18 months ago,” she explains, “and learnt to jump when I was living in Dubai.

After the pandemic, Auriane began training more with her pony and beginning competitions, which is when she and her family realised virtual learning made it “far easier to deal with school and training.” She tells us, “I wanted to join King's InterHigh to keep this way of learning, to keep flexibility, to be able to manage competitions and a good level at school.

From that point on, Auriane says “everything went fast.” She took part in her first show jumping activities in February 2021, and this month she was already competing in the French National Championship — where she ranked 4th out of 79 qualified riders!

So, what does a typical day in Auriane’s life look like? In her own words, here’s everything she packs into a typical week, from mornings in class to afternoons at the equestrian centre.

In the mornings...
I wake up at 7:30 am. Saturdays or Sundays are usually competition days two times per month. If I have no competition on weekends, I train on Saturday morning.
Time for school!
Monday to Friday, I follow my online lessons and I do homework when I have no classes during the day.

My favourite subjects are Mathematics and languages. I speak French and English, I have learned some Arabic, and I am now learning Spanish. I also got a silver medal during the 2022 Immerse Me Games. I was playing the game in several languages between school and horse riding training during all my free time. It was so much fun.

In the future, I plan to follow an IB curriculum with King's InterHigh.
Afternoons are for training
After school from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, I train at the equestrian centre.

I train 5 to 6 times per week, and I have special training before competitions. You need a strong mindset. I need to stay healthy, to eat well, and to sleep well. Show jumping requires all your attention and your best condition. It is a lot of work, so being rigorous is mandatory.
When I need to train during school hours...
Usually, I manage to take my live lessons at my desk, and if I cannot attend my live lessons because of training, I plan to watch recordings the day after.

For example, Wednesday afternoons are also training days, so I watch my classes remotely. In my case, recorded lessons are very useful.

My tutor at King's InterHigh knows about all my show jumping programs. I share my training and competitions planning. We always find solutions with the teachers to deal with everything. Even from the Regional to National Championship and the last 6 weeks of the year at school — the training and pressure were hard to organize, but we did it.

Thanks to our lesson recordings, Auriane has more time to spend training for competitions with her horses.

King’s InterHigh is an independent British international online school. Offering Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form education, we cater to students from age 7 – 18 who are looking for a high quality British education delivered in a way that revolves around their lifestyle.

VAT charges explained

The UK Government has implemented a policy to charge VAT on independent schools taking effect from the 1st of January 2025. This VAT charge is payable by families who are based in, or access, King’s InterHigh from the UK. This change does not impact families who are based outside the UK and access King’s InterHigh from another country.

We understand the significant financial commitment you make in choosing our online school as well as how important it is to be able to financially plan. After careful review of the details of the legislation, we will support parents by absorbing costs ourselves, so that a slower phasing in of this unwelcome change reduces its financial impact on families.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year (starting September 2024), Inspired Education Group will absorb much of the 20% VAT charge. For the Spring and Summer terms when the 20% VAT will now apply, we will only pass on 8.5% to families, taking up the difference ourselves.

To further support families with the financial implications of this change in government policy, for the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in September 2025) there will be no inflationary tuition fee increases, and that Inspired Education Group will continue to absorb costs to limit the increase to 8.5% for that academic year. Overall, this will mean we have phased in 17% of the 20% VAT cost over two years to avoid sudden increases for families and have not increased tuition fees.

King’s InterHigh is committed to offering competitive fees and accessible, high-quality independent education, along with the unique benefits of online learning. We are pleased that through careful cost control and the benefits of being part of Inspired, the leading global group of premium schools, we can significantly reduce the financial effect on families due to this change in UK VAT policy.
